Wedding Planning Guidance Series: Guests

Ah yes… the guest list.

Nothing brings on planning stress quite like deciding who makes the cut and who doesn’t. Suddenly, you’re fielding suggestions about cousin Bob’s best friend’s uncle’s nephew’s son John, or your mom’s best friend’s daughter’s cousin’s sister. Sound familiar?

Here’s my advice:
If they haven’t met your fiancé by the time you’re putting a ring on it, they probably don’t need to be at the wedding. (With some exceptions, of course—like Grandma who lives out of
state and doesn’t travel often.)

Now, I know firsthand how complicated this can be. I come from a big Italian and Armenian family where the guest list is often everyone you’ve ever shared bread with. But if you’re working with a budget or dreaming of an intimate wedding, this part of the planning can feel emotionally straining.

Still, you must remember: It’s your day. Who do you want there, witnessing you marry your best friend?

The A-B-C List System
To make this more manageable, I suggest breaking your guest list into three tiers:

A List
Your non-negotiables. Immediate family, best friends, the people you couldn’t imagine the day without.

B List
People you’d love to have if space or budget allows. This might include childhood friends, family friends you’re not especially close with, or neighbors who’ve been part of your life for a while.

C List
These are the extended connections, the “plus-ones” your family insists on, the distant relatives, or social acquaintances you wouldn’t mind inviting if there’s room. This tier can also be a helpful compromise when navigating family expectations.

Sending Save-the-Dates & Invitations
Timing is everything, especially when it comes to communicating with guests. Here’s a timeline that gives you room to breathe:

People are notoriously slow to RSVP. Vendors, however, will need a final guest count 2 weeks to 30 days before the big day. Send early to avoid a last-minute scramble and set the deadline 45-60 days before give wiggle room for the last-minute responses.
