Wedding Planning Guidance Series: Budgeting

BUDGET, BUDGET, BUDGET.

It’s not the most glamorous part of wedding planning, but it is one of the most important. You and your fiancé will need to determine how much you’re willing to spend and, just as importantly, how you plan to stick to it.

Figuring out your budget and priorities for your wedding early gives you a boundary you can stand by when decisions get emotional or overwhelming.

To begin, I recommend identifying two key numbers:

  1. Your Maximum Budget
This is the absolute ceiling. If prices spike or unexpected expenses arise, what’s the highest amount you’re comfortable spending, without regret or financial strain?
  2. Your ‘Sweet Spot’ Budget
This is an amount that feels reasonable, practical, and aligned with your lifestyle and savings. It’s where the celebration meets financial peace of mind. If you were able to plan the wedding at/under this number, you’d have enough left over for a more extravagant honeymoon, a house down payment, or simply a financial cushion. Keeping this number in mind can help reframe decisions and motivate intentional spending.

Budgeting is as much about mindset as it is about math. Knowing your numbers and why they matter helps you make aligned decisions throughout the process.

Prioritize Before You Price

Before you assign dollar amounts to each category, rank them by importance. Sit down together and decide what truly matters to you. Your list may include:

Every couple is different; what’s non-negotiable to one pair might be optional for another. When the budget starts tightening (and it always does), you’ll be glad you’ve already decided what comes first.

Because the truth is, your budget is more than numbers on a page; it’s a reflection of your priorities as a couple. Spend with intention, and the wedding will feel more like you in every way.

Available Tools
Included in our Grand Planning Spreadsheet is a Budget Tracker, a spreadsheet-style template that helps you prioritize vendors, allocate a % of total budget to them to help set your budgeted wedding costs per vendor, and track your budgeted versus actual costs across every major category.

It’s designed to help you stay organized, accountable, and aligned with your goals.
